Since its beginning – according to Ayurveda health doctrine – our world consists of five elements: Space or ether, fire, water, air, and earth. These ingredients determine everything – including, of course, the essence of each human being. Man is considered the microcosm of the world. All elements are, therefore, also found in his body.
But in each individual, the different elements are differently pronounced at birth. Each person is equipped or afflicted with unique physical and mental strengths and weaknesses. The type of person is determined by the mixture of the three Doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
This is how the Kapha Dosha ticks.
What makes Kapha Dosha? It arises from the elements of water and earth. Both are regarded as forming energy. In the human body, Kapha regulates the building of structures and is the measure for flexibility and stability. If Kapha is in balance, it should provide peace and love. If it becomes unbalanced, it could promote greed, colds, or obesity.
What supports – what disturbs the balance?
The seasons of winter and the beginning of spring strengthen Kapha. All fatty, fried, and heavy foods – especially desserts and dairy products – should be avoided by people who are categorized as Kapha Dosha type and instead choose light, tart, bitter and stimulating foods. Also useful: skip snacks and eat only soup or steamed vegetables in the evening.
Physically, Kapha is associated with liquids. An excess of Kapha on a mental level leads to laziness, heaviness, and listlessness. On an emotional level, it can promote melancholy or depression in imbalance.
Kapha Dosha becomes unbalanced when the body has accumulated too many toxins.
Physical and essential characteristics that Ayurveda ascribes to this type of Kapha Dosha are
- Skin: thick, oily, soft, white, and cool
- Hair: full, thick, wavy, shiny, and mostly brown
- Face: large, round and full
- Neck: is solid
- Nose: large and rounded
- Eyes: attractive and large, blue or brown
- Mouth: large with full lips
- Teeth: large and white and sit in well-developed gums
- Physique: great physical endurance and performance
- Energy: even slow, graceful movements
- Character: calm, balanced personality; rarely gets excited
- Intellect: absorbs new things slowly, but has an excellent long-term memory
- Sleep: deep, long
- Interpersonal: loving, tolerant, forgiving
- Character/Manner of living: tends to accumulate possessions and complacency
Recipes for the Kapha Dosha Type
If we look at these ingredients, it quickly becomes apparent that this one does not only make fire under our digestion. How do you balance all these foods? We have a few ideas that will get you through the day in a varied and tasty way.
Millet porridge with cinnamon and plums
Millet is a grain that is good for Kapha Dosha types; turmeric and cinnamon are also useful for it. Dried plums and berries are also suitable for the constitution type. Kapha Dosha types are guaranteed a successful start to the day with our warm millet porridge!
- – 50 g millet
- – 100 ml of almond milk
- – 5 dried plums
- – 1 tsp Ceylon cinnamon powder
- – ½ TL raw cocoa powder
- – 1 pinch turmeric powder
We put the almond milk together with the millet in a pot and let it simmer at low temperature. In the meantime, we put the dried plums in water and wash the berries. When the millet is cooked, we stir in Ceylon cinnamon, cocoa, and turmeric powder. Pour the millet porridge into a bowl and garnish with the drained plums. We enjoy the warm breakfast as soon as we get hungry – best after a morning run in nature.
Lukewarm lentil salad in chicory boats
We have learned that bitter substances are well taken care of in the diet of the Kapha Dosha type. Therefore, for skin food, we enjoy an incredibly painful example among the salads of our earth – the chicory. In combination with our lukewarm lentil salad, however, the bitter note does not at all make for a funny feeling, but rather for culinary harmony.
- – 1 chicory
- – 100 g red lentils
- – 2 carrots
- – 2 tubers beet
- – bunch of fresh parsley
- – tsp Moringa oil
- – 1teaspoon cider vinegar
- – teaspoon Tulsi powder
- – pinch of chilli
- – piece of ginger
- – Fresh pepper
First, we prepare the lentils as usual. Similar to rice or pseudo-cereals, these are first boiled up in twice the amount of water and then boiled down at low heat. Towards the end of the cooking time, we devote ourselves to the vegetables. We cut the beetroot, carrot, and parsley into small pieces.
In a screwed glass we mix Moringa oil, apple vinegar, and Tulsi powder. We also add spices. After shaking our dressing well, we spread it on the vegetables. Add the lentils, which are now cooked. Now we stir our lukewarm salad well and fill it onto the individual chicory leaves. Thanks to their firm consistency and curved shape, they are ideal as salad boats.
Chocolate bean mousse with apple compote
Does raw cocoa always work? We agree! Thanks to its intense aroma, the superfood of the future are even capable of transforming hearty foods into sweet treats—the result: a dessert with maximum seductiveness, completely without sugar or additives.
- – 200 g black beans
- – 1 teaspoon of coconut oil
- – 3 tablespoons raw cocoa powder
- – 1 tablespoon natural cocoa nibs
- – 1 pinch chili powder
Put the cooked beans in a sieve and wash them with water. After dabbing them with a soft cloth, we put them in the blender together with the raw cocoa powder and the chili powder. As soon as the blender has processed the ingredients into a delicate cream, the mousse is almost ready. For the final touch, we fold in the raw cocoa nibs.
