Arjuna Herb: Application in Ayurveda


Arjuna herb strengthens the human health center – the heart. The Indian tree is particularly valued in Ayurveda for its healing and strengthening effect on our life organ. The Arjuna tree

The impressive Arjuna tree, also known as Terminalia arjuna, can grow up to 26 meters high and is native to large parts of India. Although from the outside, it is a rather inconspicuous, evergreen tree with a gray-white bark, the wood has an unusual reddish coloration on the inside.

A powder is extracted from the red inner layer, characterized by its beautiful color and unique ingredients. This is because it contains 34% calcium carbonate, 16% tannin tanning agents, 9% other calcium salts, aluminum, magnesium, organic acids, vegetable dyes, and sugar. For this reason, the bark of the tree is used in Ayurveda to achieve healing and strength.

Arjuna also has a special meaning in Indian mythology because it is the name of a tree and a hero.

A heroic tree: Krishna and Arjuna

The tree shares its name with an Indian heroic figure from the epic Mahabharata. Arjuna was Krishana’s dialogue partner and a brave fighter. One day, the gods brought the Arjuna tree to earth when the hero needed emotional strength. The tree helped Arjuna regain his power, so people should also benefit from the tree’s good qualities.

Similar to the heart-strong fighter and hero Arjuna, wisdom and strength are also anchored in the tree. So it is not surprising that in Ayurveda, the bark is used primarily for internal complaints, such as those of the soul or the heart.

Arjuna Herb: Effect of the red bark powder

Because of its many healing and dosha-balancing properties, the plant is considered in Ayurveda to be Divya aushadhi, i.e., a plant that carries holiness within itself. Arjuna has a mainly Kapha- and Pitta-reducing effect and strengthens the Vata-Dosha. As a food supplement, powder or tincture, it is used in various areas.

Arjuna Herb: Balsam for the heart

The heart is the expression of life because it is a vital organ and, at the same time, the center of our emotions. In Ayurveda, the heart is also the seat of consciousness, spiritual values, and mental abilities. Therefore the soul must be well and strong enough to keep us in our psychological and physical center.

Arjuna herb has a particularly beneficial effect on the heart and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years to treat cardiac dysfunction. It strengthens both the emotional and the physical heart and strengthens the heart muscle. Thus the frequency of the heartbeats is reduced, but at the same time, the beat volume is increased. In other words, the heart needs fewer heartbeats but beats with particular strength. This extends the relaxation period of the heart and naturally relieves the muscle.

The heart also connects the body with the soul. Ayurveda recognizes this special relationship and therefore uses Arjuna also for mental loads. Are there any side effects?

There are no known side effects associated with Arjuna. However, if you suffer from heart problems, it is recommended that you consult your doctor.

Always take the recommended dose of Arjuna. As there is still little research on Arjuna’s use during pregnancy, pregnant women should avoid taking it if in doubt.

Taking Arjuna

Arjuna has been used in Ayurveda as a natural food supplement and tonic for many thousands of years. It is usually taken in powder form, i.e., as Arjuna Churna.

It can also be combined well with other spices such as ashwagandha or guggul.

Arjuna powder with milk or as tea

Because of its mainly dry properties, Arjuna is best boiled in milk. Arjuna milk can be especially beneficial before bedtime, especially if you are nervous or have heart problems. Boil a glass of milk and stir about ½ teaspoon of the bark powder into the drink. If you like, you can also add a little ashwagandha.

Another possibility is to treat yourself to a lovely, warm tea. Arjuna tea is especially recommended for high cholesterol levels or high blood pressure. Boil ½ teaspoon of the powder with hot water and then add a little honey to taste. Many different ready-made blends of Arjuna tea are already available in stores, which of course, work just as well.

Arjuna capsules

Of course, there are also Arjuna capsules that can be taken as a dietary supplement. The recommended daily dose is usually three times a tablet per day, which is taken with meals.
